BIO

David Tollervey, Professor of RNA Biology at the University of Edinburgh, is a world leader in the identification and functional analysis of non-coding RNAs. Many of the factors he has identified are conserved throughout the animal kingdom, including humans, where they are often linked to disease. He became known for his elegant studies of ribosome assembly, beginning with the key discovery of a class of small nucleolar RNAs that play essential roles in ribosomal RNA processing and modification. His work has helped to establish and maintain the leading international position that the UK occupies in RNA biomedical research.
